Up Up and Away with Lifted Coil Springs
Offroading is a relatively modern phenomenon. We can do it for fun these days because suspension technology allows us to. Going back to the days of black and white movies, the people bouncing along in trucks over rough terrain weren’t enjoying the experience. The filmmakers may have made it look funny, but it probably took years off the life of the vehicles – and didn’t do much for the mood of those inside, being thrown around.
If you have a car that is not specifically designed for this, but you love the great outdoors or you happen to live in or visit places where words like smooth and even don’t apply, help is at hand. We have high-quality lifted coil springs that can raise the body of your city-slicker car to cope with the demands of rougher surfaces.
With our coil springs, you can increase the ride height by a little or quite a lot to improve the suspension travel (the changing vertical distance between the wheels and the body). You may not quite want a monster truck, but most people would rather have a bit of comfort, and a little flexibility, rather than being on the sort of suspension that may be good for flat-surface racing but makes you feel like you should put on a lot of extra pounds in the rump area.
What’s more, at Airbagit we have more than one type of lift coil springs – a lot more– to cater for different marques of various ages.
Lift Coil Springs: The Technology
Like countless inventions that we take for granted, the coil spring was somebody’s brainchild; it didn’t always exist. Modern explanations of what liftcoil springs do can involve references to “stored energy”, which can stretch the understanding of the average mind, but all it really means is that the spring has the ability to push back, to return to its original position after being squashed. In other words, it does what springs do in beds, seating furniture, and many other applications.
The place we mainly see coil springs out in the open, rather than hidden behind fabrics and foam, is underneath a car, and if they are not the most sophisticated pieces of equipment, they are very important and have stood the test of time. They don’t last forever, though. All the squeezing and releasing takes its toll on the steel and they become stiffer and less responsive with age.
Fortunately, advances in manufacturing have resulted in better springs than ever, and although they may look the same, they are more sophisticated – at least the brands we deal in are.
